Building
awareness: Extending your knowledge
The best source of information about Indigenous peoples is
Indigenous people.
At
the end of the day, it wasn't so much the strategy, what teachers
did, that made the difference it was what they believed.
And the way to change what non-Indigenous people believed
was get them to engage in conversations with Aboriginal people.
There
is no substitute for good personal relationships.
Cross-cultural
training
But if you want to get started somewhere many educational
and training institutions have found more formal cross-cultural
training helpful. Your local Indigenous Education or training
consultant will be able to provide leads for this. There are
also print resources/kits which have proved useful.

Resources
It can no longer be said that there
are inadequate resources to help educate Indigenous students.
They abound.
References to some, relevant in context
or the subject of case studies, have been included at various
points in this material.
Local consultants may be able to provide
ideas about the sorts of resources you require. They can also
help you get in touch with local resource centres for Indigenous
education.
