Improved outcomes: Skilled teachers

Focus: Facilitating an understanding of the language of instruction

Strategies:

    • Skilling teachers in ESL pedagogy and mandating use of common approaches across the school.
    • Utilising Walking Talking Text across the school and providing induction training for all new teachers.
    • Workshops for school community to facilitate understandings of teaching and learning ESL for Indigenous students.
    • Involvement in DEST-funded cluster middle school project, skilling teachers in assisting Indigenous ESL learners to understand the language of mathematics.

Milestones 2006:

  • Clear use of ESL pedagogy in all classrooms.
  • Continued improvement in systemic literacy and numeracy results.

Focus: Linking with and learning from other practitioners

Strategies:

    • Involvement in DEST-funded cluster middle school project, skilling teachers in assisting Indigenous ESL learners to understand the language of mathematics.
    • Sharing with like schools through involvement and membership of the Indigenous Schools Alliance.
    • Teacher visitation program: sharing experiences with teachers in our students ‘home communities’ in the Torres Strait and Cape.

Improved outcomes: Resourcing

Focus: Provision of relevant and culturally appropriate literacy materials

Strategies:

    • Purchase of reading materials and texts that reflect the lives and experiences of Indigenous students, both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander.

Improved outcomes: Promoting student success

Focus: Role modelling and mentoring materials

Strategies:

    • Continue to work with Cairns Youth Mentoring program (CYMS).
    • Support CYMS in seeking funding to allow 10 & 11 year olds to access the program.
    • Bring in role models and mentors to encourage and promote success and perseverance.

Focus: Promoting achievements

Strategies:

    • Support student access to Gifted and Talented programs.
    • Support for Year 7 Graduation Day ceremony.
    • High quality electives program which focuses on activities which promote Indigenous culture and other specialist sessions as a incentive for positive engagement in class activities.

Focus: Promoting pride in home cultures

Strategies:

  • Provision of materials for Indigenous Studies program: a contemporary program that endeavours to instil pride in background and to link home and school in a respectful and positive manner.
