Accessing school: Attendance

Focus: Effective and continuous home/school liaison

Strategies:

  • Employment of 0.5 Assistant Teacher to monitor attendance and make home visits.
  • Referral of parents/carers to support agencies as appropriate.
  • Encouraging parents to access schooling for their children even when not all perceived expectations can be met (lunches, uniforms, books, shoes).
  • Nutrition program to encourage parents and children to see the links between healthy lifestyle and education.
  • Emergency supplies of books, pens and so on at school.
  • Fostering community engagement through parent forums (term basis) and monthly workshops.

Focus: Support in dealing with social factors that may contribute to truancy

Strategies:

  • Introduction of Life Education Program for students.
  • Promote the ‘You Can Do It’ program in the school and in individual classrooms to facilitate development of self-esteem and social and organisational skills.

More about ‘You Can Do It’…

  • Offering alternative programs which target students who are at risk of becoming involved in anti-social behaviour and who may be subject to suspensions.
  • Continued representation on inter-agency Inhalant Action Group.

Focus: Continuous and strong talk around ‘Strong and Smart’ behaviour

Strategies:

  • Reports and chats about attendance at weekly Parades.
  • Parent and carer education program about acceptable reasons for absence.

Focus: Whole class and individual responsibility for attendance

Strategies:

  • Individual teacher promotion and monitoring of attendance.
  • Whole school promotion for classes with 100% attendance.
  • Educational and healthy lifestyle resources for acknowledging 100% attendance at the end of each term and year.
  • Reviewing attendance data on a class by class basis.
