Working
systematically: The Murri School, Brisbane
'It's
an ownership thing. That's what it is.'
The Aboriginal and Islander Community School is known as 'The
Murri School'.
Why this school
works where other schools don't… I believe, is situated in
the fact that it is Indigenous-owned and Indigenous-controlled.
Tiga Bayles, Chair of the Board of Directors
'The Murri School', is an independent school, established
in 1986, specifically as a Murri School for Murri kids.
The
What Works Project identified three 'pillars' common
to successful outcomes for Indigenous students
cultural inclusivity, skills and participation. This school
scores very highly on each. Going through the check list for
improving the level of student success included in these materials,
the school also seemed to have all aspects covered. But its
achievement, as is so often the case, obviously comes at a
cost.
