Aboriginal Education Operational Plan 2003-2005

The following table is an abridged and summarised version of the school’s complete plan. It does not include all Key Focus Areas or Strategies and omits sections dealing with ‘Timeline’, ‘Staff to action’, ‘Resources’ and ‘Monitoring and measuring’.

It is included here as an indication of the breadth of strategies being pursued and to provide some starting points for readers.

Key focus area: Access & Participation
Objective: To improve the retention of Aboriginal students at the secondary school level.

Strategies:

  • Identify the year 7 students residing in the school catchment area.
  • The ALO to communicate with Aboriginal families and other agencies when students are not enrolled to determine why.
  • Assist in the enrolment of Aboriginal students from year 7.
  • Take current year eight students to the primary schools as part of transition – include Aboriginal representatives.
  • Peer mentor system for first few weeks of Year 8.
  • Training for Aboriginal students before visits to Primary schools.
  • Yr 10 Aboriginal school-based traineeships.
  • Establish mentoring, role modelling and student centred programs to promote and encourage the retention of Aboriginal students throughout the secondary years.
  • Attend Croc Fest and participation in Drumming Program.
  • Year 10 Work Experience.
  • Promote various post-compulsory schooling options and counsel students to ensure that appropriate educational paths are selected.
  • Bibbulmun Trek.
  • Manjedal Camp.

Key focus area: Attendance
Objective: To improve the attendance of Aboriginal students at the secondary and post-compulsory school levels.

Strategies:

  • Provide a welcoming, culturally sensitive and supportive school environment for Aboriginal students.
  • Artwork project in courtyard.
  • Implement the Anti-Racism Policy and procedures for students, staff and school communities.
  • Establish processes for more positive and effective relationships between the staff and Aboriginal students including learning and teaching relationships.
  • Develop and implement learning programs that value and are inclusive of the cultural differences of Aboriginal students.
  • Develop individual attendance plans for Aboriginal students in collaboration with their families.
  • Liaise with other agencies to encourage and assist regular attendance.

Key focus area: Literacy
Objective: To improve the literacy levels of Aboriginal students in the secondary school.

Strategies:

  • Staff to undertake PD in Aboriginal ways of learning and cultural differences so that they can be formally recognised, valued and promoted as strengths.
  • Staff to undertake PD to identify the factors that prevent successful language and literacy learning by Aboriginal students.
  • Encourage the Literacy and Numeracy Committee to examine and promote support programs that assist the achievement of language and literacy outcomes for Aboriginal students.
  • Continue to implement processes and procedures that identify and cater for Aboriginal students not achieving equitable outcomes in literacy. Volunteer Tutors for 1:1 or small group work.
  • Continue to provide IEPs to Aboriginal students with a history of conductive hearing loss to assist their language and literacy skills development.
  • Continue to implement language programs that encourage and assist Aboriginal students to achieve proficiency in Standard Australian English.
  • Develop language and literacy performance measures and assessment methods that are culturally sensitive for Aboriginal students and use this as data to measure student progress.

Key focus area: Aboriginal Employment and Professional Development
Objective: To improve the employment and career development opportunities of Aboriginal staff in our secondary school.

Strategies:

  • Provide training for all staff in relation to the school’s anti-racism policy.
  • Promote and encourage the employment of an Aboriginal mentor in the school on a full time basis through applications for funding.
  • Promote and encourage Aboriginal staff attendance at PL specifically related to their role regarding the education of Aboriginal students, delivery of Aboriginal Studies, and dealing with Aboriginal issues within the school context.

Key focus area: The involvement of Aboriginal parents and community in educational decision making
Objective: To improve the opportunities for involvement of Aboriginal people on educational advisory, reference and management committees in our secondary school.

Strategies:

  • Continue to ensure that the Aboriginal community is represented on the School Council.
  • Continue to promote effective participation of Aboriginal parents, caregivers, community members and employees through the ASSPA Committee.
  • Continue to ensure that the Merredin community is represented at Aboriginal Education District Council.
  • Provide information for parents, caregivers, community members and employees to promote their involvement in school policies and strategies such as the Anti-racism Policy, the IESIP application and the school’s AEOP.
  • Work in collaboration with Aboriginal parents and caregivers to implement the home visit strategy to promote Aboriginal students’ regular attendance.
  • Plan for and use Aboriginal people as special teachers of the culture, history, contemporary society and languages of Aboriginal people.
