Other programs

Cross-cultural professional development

All new staff are required to undertake cross-cultural professional development in their first year at the College. Continuing staff are also able to access programs either on campus or off-campus.

ESL in the Mainstream professional development

Teachers are offered access to this program either on campus or through the NT Department of Education.

Teacher support program

This is an internal program that focuses on the development of critically reflective practice and encourages teachers to trial new approaches.

Access to conferences

Teachers across the College are able to access a range of conferences around Australia.

Community liaison

Staff across the College are involved in liaising with our parents in remote communities. We are in constant phone and fax contact for a variety of reasons (to resolve issues, to support living away from home, to get permission for camps or special programs, to update on progress). Reports about student academic progress are sent home every term. Teams of staff visit communities throughout the year for a variety of purposes (to discuss issues, to share information about pathways and opportunities, to consult about ideas in education, to talk with specific groups about specific issues).

Aboriginal Student Support Officer

This is a specific position designed to support all College staff in effective communication strategies with students and parents.

Parent programs

We run a range of programs for parents where they are invited to stay at the College (usually for one week) and work with College staff. These programs have differing focal points including: understanding pathways; supporting their children in the transition from living in communities to residential secondary education; supporting their children in the transition from middle school education to senior school education (making subject and course choices); exploring work and further training opportunities; resolving issues; developing collaborative discussions about education; consulting on educational developments; attending special events and award ceremonies; and making educational decisions for their children.

Our ASSPA committee

Once a term this group meets to discuss educational programs and issues as the consultative committee for both the Board and the College. It ensures that an Indigenous voice is maintained in management issues and that our Indigenous parents are involved in educational decision making at the College level.
