A Balanced Numeracy Program

A Balanced Numeracy Program should:

  • develop the specialised knowledge and language needed for understanding and applying mathematical concepts
  • help children learn rules of organization and mathematics within the context of their own lives
  • help children make links between first-hand experience and mathematics
  • give children opportunities to get their ideas together through talk.

A Balanced Numeracy Program should therefore include all the following components:

  • Shared Teaching Approach
  • Guided Teaching Approach
  • Independent Work
  • Paired Work
  • Small Group Work
